The Learn button on a LiftMaster ceiling opener is on the motor unit, just above the antenna wire that hangs down from it. On some models it is hidden under a light cover, either on the front or on the side. Chamberlain also says to look on the same side of the opener where the wall control and safety sensor wires connect. Wall-mount jackshaft models such as the 8500 and RJO20 use the Learn button on the wall control panel instead.

You need the Learn button on LiftMaster openers (made by The Chamberlain Group) to pair remotes, keypads and myQ devices, and to clear the opener’s memory. This guide describes where to find it on each type of opener and what its color tells you. If the opener is not working at all, see our LiftMaster troubleshooting guide first.

Where is the learn button on a LiftMaster ceiling opener?

Follow the antenna wire up to the motor unit; the Learn button sits directly above where the wire comes out. Chamberlain says the antenna hangs from the logic board side of the opener. That side also holds the screw terminals for the wall control and safety sensor wires.

Use these clues to find it on a chain, belt or screw drive opener mounted on the ceiling:

  1. Stand under the motor unit and look for a thin wire dangling a few inches below it. That is the antenna.
  2. Look for the terminals where the thin wall control and sensor wires attach. They are on the same side.
  3. Look for a small square or round colored button with a small LED next to it, close to the antenna.
  4. If you do not see it, check behind the light lens. Chamberlain says the button may be under a light cover, and its diagrams show both front light covers and side light covers.

Use a flashlight, since the button is small and the motor unit casts a shadow.

Your model number is useful when you call support. Chamberlain says it is on the side of the opener opposite the antenna, behind the light lens cover.

Where is the learn button on a LiftMaster wall-mount (jackshaft) opener?

Wall-mount openers mount beside the door on the torsion bar, and some of them are programmed from the wall control instead of the opener.

  • Models 8500 and RJO20: Chamberlain’s programming article says to use the Learn button on the myQ control panel, not on the opener.
  • Yellow-button jackshaft models without Wi-Fi: Chamberlain says these use the Learn button on the hard-wired wall control.
  • Owner’s manual check: LiftMaster’s 8500 manual says accessories are programmed with the Learn button on the myQ control panel, and the buttons on the opener itself are only for travel and force settings.

For the Wi-Fi wall-mount model, see our LiftMaster 8500W guide.

Where is the learn button on a LiftMaster wall control?

Some wall controls have their own Learn button, which lets you program remotes from the ground. Chamberlain’s steps are to press and release the wall control’s Learn button twice; its LED begins blinking, and you then have 30 seconds to hold the remote button.

Smart control panels with a screen do not need a physical Learn button. You use the menu: PROGRAM, then REMOTE. If your wall control has only a single push bar or doorbell-style button, it has no Learn function, so use the button on the opener.

What color is the learn button on a LiftMaster, and what does it mean?

The color tells you the opener’s radio technology and roughly when it was made. You need it to buy a compatible remote or keypad.

Chamberlain also lists square yellow, white and gray buttons on DIP switch openers made before 1993, which are no longer supported. Faded buttons can fool you: purple may look brown, and red may look orange. The antenna color is a good second check. Read more in LiftMaster Security+ 2.0 explained.

What does the learn button do?

Press and release to program; press and hold to erase. Chamberlain lists these functions:

Purple, red/orange and green buttons stay in programming for 30 seconds. Yellow buttons stay active up to 3 minutes, but only the first 30 seconds accept remotes and keypads. Full steps are in our guide to programming a LiftMaster remote.

How do you use the learn button to program a remote?

Total time: 2 minutes

Find the button

Locate the Learn button above the antenna wire or under the light cover, as described above.

Press and release it

Press once and let go. The LED next to it glows steady.

Hold the remote button

Within 30 seconds, press and hold the remote button you want to use.

Release when the opener responds

Let go when the opener lights flash or you hear two clicks, then test the remote from a safe spot.

⚠️ Safety first

  • Use a sturdy ladder and keep three points of contact. Do not stand on the top step to reach the motor unit.
  • Unplug the opener before removing a light lens if you need to look behind it, and let the bulb cool first. Disconnect power at the breaker before removing panels.
  • Do not touch the antenna wire’s connection, the logic board or the wire terminals while the opener is plugged in.
  • Never adjust springs, cables or brackets; they are under extreme tension.
  • Keep everyone clear of the door when you test a remote, and never walk under a moving door.

When should you call a technician?

  • You cannot find a Learn button anywhere on the opener or wall control, and you cannot read the model number.
  • The Learn LED does not light when you press the button, even with power on.
  • The LED keeps blinking a code you cannot clear.
  • The opener is a pre-1993 DIP switch model, which Chamberlain no longer supports; replacement may be the practical choice.

How can you make the learn button easier to use next time?

  • Write the Learn button color and model number on a label inside the garage.
  • Keep the antenna wire hanging straight down; it is also your marker for the button.
  • If your opener has a light lens over the button, note which side it is on.
  • Consider a wall control with a Learn button if the motor unit is hard to reach.

Frequently asked questions

Why can’t I find the learn button on my LiftMaster?

It may be under the light cover, or on the side of the motor unit you cannot see from below. Follow the antenna wire up; the button sits above it. On jackshaft models 8500 and RJO20, use the Learn button on the control panel instead.

Is the learn button on the LiftMaster remote or the opener?

On the opener, and on some wall controls. Remotes do not have a Learn button, although universal remotes such as the 893MAX have a separate program button.

What does the light next to the learn button mean?

It shows programming status. It glows steady when the opener is ready to learn a remote and turns off when time runs out or after a memory erase. On older openers the same LED blinks diagnostic codes.

My LiftMaster learn button looks brown. What color is it?

Chamberlain says faded purple buttons can look brown. A purple antenna wire confirms a purple Learn button opener.

Can I program a LiftMaster without touching the learn button?

Yes, from a wall control with a Learn button, a screen-style control panel, or the myQ app on Wi-Fi openers with a yellow or white Learn button.
