A ceiling-mounted garage door opener motor unit with its light cover

The Chamberlain garage door opener Learn button is on the motor unit on the ceiling, right above the antenna wire that hangs down from it. On some models it is tucked under the light cover. It is a small colored button (yellow, purple, red/orange, green, or white on the newest models) with a small LED next to it. Press and release it to program a remote; hold it about 6 seconds and it erases every remote, so be careful.

Chamberlain garage door openers (made by The Chamberlain Group, which also makes LiftMaster) use the same Learn button system across most models. This guide explains where the Chamberlain garage door opener Learn button is, what its color means and how to use it. Where is the learn button on a Chamberlain garage door opener?

Find the thin antenna wire hanging from the motor unit and look directly above it. Chamberlain’s support article says the Learn button sits above the antenna wire and may also be under a light cover. Its diagrams show both front light covers and side light covers.

Use these steps to find it:

  1. Stand under the motor unit and find the antenna, a thin wire dangling a few inches below the housing.
  2. Look on that side of the motor unit for the terminals where the wall control and safety sensor wires attach. Chamberlain says the Learn button is on the same side.
  3. Look for a small colored button with a tiny LED beside it.
  4. If you still cannot see it, check behind the light lens, with the opener unplugged and the bulb cool.

While you are up there, note the model number. Chamberlain says it is on the side opposite the antenna, behind the light lens cover. You need it for replacement parts and support calls.

Can you use a learn button on the wall control instead?

Yes, if your wall control has one. Some Chamberlain wall controls have their own Learn button: press and release it twice until its LED blinks, then within 30 seconds hold the remote button until the opener lights flash or you hear two clicks.

Control panels with a screen use a menu instead: PROGRAM, then REMOTE. Wi-Fi openers with a yellow or white Learn button can also pair remotes through the myQ app (Settings, Devices, Add a New Device, Accessory, Garage Door Remote). A plain push-button wall control has no Learn function.

What color is the Chamberlain learn button, and why does it matter?

The color identifies the opener’s radio technology, which decides which remotes and keypads will work. Chamberlain’s chart:

Learn buttonAntennaTechnologyYears
GreenGrayBillion Code, 390 MHz1993 to 1997
Red/orangeGraySecurity+ rolling code, 390 MHz1997 to 2004
Purple/brownPurpleSecurity+ rolling code, 315 MHz2005 to 2014
Yellow, roundYellowSecurity+ 2.0, 310/315/390 MHz2011 to 2022
Yellow with “Step Saver Set Up” labelYellowSecurity+ 2.0, 315 or 390 MHz2022 to 2025
White, roundWhiteSecurity+ 3.0, Bluetooth2025 to present

Openers made before 1993 used DIP switches and are no longer supported. Chamberlain warns that fading can make purple look brown and red look orange, so check the antenna color too. LiftMaster openers use the same colors; see where the Learn button is on a LiftMaster.

What does the Chamberlain learn button do?

Chamberlain says purple, red/orange and green buttons stay in programming for 30 seconds. Yellow buttons stay active up to 3 minutes, but only the first 30 seconds accept remotes and keypads; the rest is for myQ devices.

How do you program a remote with the Chamberlain learn button?

Total time: 2 minutes

Bring the remote up the ladder

Have the remote in hand before you touch the Learn button, because the window is short.

Press and release the Learn button

Press once and let go. The LED next to it lights up. Do not hold it.

Hold the remote button within 30 seconds

Press and hold the button you want to use for this door.

Release when the opener responds

Let go when the opener lights flash or you hear two clicks.

Test from a safe spot

Climb down, stand clear of the door, and press the remote button.

For universal remotes such as the Chamberlain 953EV and 956EV, Chamberlain’s support article explains a setup step that matches the remote to your Learn button color before you press Learn. Follow the instructions for your exact remote model. More pairing help is in our guide to programming a LiftMaster remote, which uses the same Learn button steps.

How do you erase remotes with the learn button?

Hold the Learn button until the LED turns off, about 6 seconds. That clears all handheld remotes and keypad codes. Do this after a remote is lost or stolen, or when you move into a home, then reprogram the remotes you keep. Our LiftMaster reset guide explains the other resets, which work the same way on Chamberlain openers with matching Learn buttons.

⚠️ Safety first

  • Use a sturdy ladder, keep three points of contact, and do not stand on the top step.
  • Unplug the opener before removing a light lens, and let the bulb cool. Disconnect power at the breaker before removing panels.
  • Do not touch the wire terminals or logic board while the opener has power.
  • Never adjust springs, cables or brackets; they are under extreme tension and can cause serious injury.
  • Keep everyone clear when testing a remote, and never walk under a moving door.

When should you call a technician?

  • You cannot find a Learn button on the opener or wall control and cannot identify the model.
  • The Learn LED does not light when pressed, even with power on.
  • A compatible remote with a fresh battery will not pair after several tries.
  • Your opener is an old DIP switch model, which Chamberlain no longer supports.

How can you make the learn button easier to use?

  • Label the Learn button color and model number somewhere in the garage.
  • Add a wall control with a Learn button if the motor unit is hard to reach.
  • Keep the antenna wire hanging straight down; it marks the button’s location.
  • Press and release quickly when programming so you never erase memory by mistake.

Frequently asked questions

Why can’t I find the learn button on my Chamberlain opener?

It may be under the light cover or on a side of the motor unit you cannot see from below. Follow the antenna wire up; the button sits above it, on the same side as the wire terminals.

What color is the learn button on a newer Chamberlain opener?

Yellow on most openers made from 2011 to 2025, and white on openers made from 2025 onward, according to Chamberlain’s chart.

Does the Chamberlain learn button erase my remotes if I press it?

A quick press and release does not erase anything. Holding it about 6 seconds, until the LED turns off, erases all remotes and keypads.

Is the Chamberlain learn button the same as the LiftMaster learn button?

Both brands are made by The Chamberlain Group and use the same Learn button colors and functions in the company’s support articles. Locations can differ slightly by model.

How long do I have after pressing the learn button?

Hold the remote button within 30 seconds. Yellow-button openers stay in programming longer, but only the first 30 seconds accept remotes and keypads.
