To program a LiftMaster garage door opener to a remote, press and release the Learn button on the motor unit, then within 30 seconds press and hold the remote button until the opener lights flash or you hear two clicks. That is how to program a LiftMaster garage door opener for most remotes and keypads. If your opener has a wall control with its own Learn button, a screen, or Wi-Fi, you can pair from there instead. Setting the open and closed stopping points (travel limits) is a separate job that uses the Adjustment button and the arrow buttons.
Quick facts
| Task | Pair remotes and keypads, and set travel limits on a LiftMaster opener |
|---|---|
| Appliance | LiftMaster garage door openers (chain, belt, screw and wall-mount jackshaft models) |
| Time needed | 2 to 5 minutes per remote; about 10 minutes for travel limits |
| Difficulty | Easy |
| Tools needed | Step ladder, the remote or keypad, a 2×4 board for the safety test |
LiftMaster garage door openers (made by The Chamberlain Group) all pair accessories through a Learn button, but where you press it and how long it stays active depends on the opener’s age. This guide walks through each method, then covers travel limits and the safety test. If your opener is acting up rather than just needing setup, start with our LiftMaster garage door opener troubleshooting guide.
What does “programming” a LiftMaster opener mean?
Programming usually means one of two things: pairing a remote, keypad or myQ device to the opener, or setting how far the door travels. Pairing uses the Learn button. Travel and force settings use the Adjustment button and the UP and DOWN arrows on newer models.
Chamberlain’s support pages list three jobs for the Learn button: programming accessories, clearing the opener’s memory, and, on Wi-Fi models, starting Wi-Fi setup. Pressing and releasing it programs; pressing and holding it erases. That difference matters, because holding it too long wipes every remote you own.
How do you find the Learn button and its color?
Look on the motor unit on the ceiling, above the antenna wire that hangs down from it. On some models the Learn button sits under a light cover. Chamberlain also says it is on the same side of the opener where the wall control and safety sensor wires connect.
The button’s color tells you which radio system the opener uses. Chamberlain’s chart lists these colors for its openers:
| Learn button color | Technology | Years made |
|---|---|---|
| Green | Billion Code, 390 MHz | 1993 to 1997 |
| Red/orange | Security+ rolling code, 390 MHz | 1997 to 2004 |
| Purple (may look brown) | Security+ rolling code, 315 MHz | 2005 to 2014 |
| Yellow, round | Security+ 2.0, 310/315/390 MHz | 2011 to 2022 |
| Yellow with “Step Saver Set Up” label | Security+ 2.0, 315 or 390 MHz | 2022 to 2025 |
| White, round | Security+ 3.0, Bluetooth | 2025 to present |
Chamberlain notes that fading can change how colors look, so purple may look brown and red may look orange. For help with odd locations, see where the Learn button is on a LiftMaster.
How to program a LiftMaster garage door opener with the Learn button
This is the standard method and works for most remotes and keypads. You need to reach the motor unit, so set up a sturdy ladder and keep the remote in your pocket.
Total time: 5 minutes
Get the remote and a ladder ready
Put a fresh battery in the remote if it is old, then climb to where you can reach the Learn button on the motor unit.
Press and release the Learn button once
Press and immediately release it. Chamberlain says the LED next to the button glows steady. Do not hold it, because holding for about 6 seconds erases the opener’s memory.
Press and hold the remote button within 30 seconds
Press and hold the remote button you want to use for this door.
Release when the opener responds
Let go when the opener lights flash or you hear two clicks. That confirms the remote is paired.
Test from the ground
Climb down, stand clear of the door, and press the remote button. The door should open or close.
Repeat for each remote
Each remote, and each button you want to use, must be programmed separately.
On purple, red/orange and green Learn buttons, Chamberlain says the LED stays lit for 30 seconds. Yellow-button openers stay in accessory programming for up to 3 minutes, but only the first 30 seconds accept remotes and keypads; the rest is for myQ devices. If it times out, wait for the LED to turn off, then start again.
Can you program a LiftMaster from the wall control instead?
Yes, if your wall control has its own Learn button or a screen. This saves a ladder trip and is the required method on some jackshaft models.
- Wall control with a Learn button: Press and release the Learn button on the wall control twice. Its LED starts blinking. Within 30 seconds, press and hold the remote button until the opener lights flash or you hear two clicks.
- Smart control panel with a screen: Use the navigation button to go to PROGRAM, then REMOTE. Press and hold the remote button, and release when the lights flash or you hear two clicks.
- Jackshaft models 8500 and RJO20: Chamberlain says to use the Learn button on the myQ control panel, not on the opener. See our LiftMaster 8500W guide for wall-mount models.
How do you program a LiftMaster with the myQ app?
Wi-Fi openers with a yellow or white Learn button can pair remotes through the myQ app. Chamberlain gives these steps:
- Open the myQ app and go to Settings, then Devices.
- Tap Add a New Device (or +), then Accessory, then Garage Door Remote.
- Choose your opener, then scan the remote’s QR code or pick your remote type.
- Tap Get Started to put the opener in Learn mode and follow the prompts.
The opener clicks and flashes, and the app shows a success screen when pairing works.
How do you program a universal LiftMaster remote?
Universal remotes such as the 893MAX need one extra step: you tell the remote which radio system to use. Chamberlain’s steps for the 893MAX are to hold the program button on the back until the remote’s LED turns on, then press the button you want to use a set number of times based on the opener’s Learn button color.
| Learn button color | Presses of the remote button |
|---|---|
| Yellow | 1 |
| Purple/brown | 2 |
| Red/orange | 3 |
| Green | 4 |
Then press any other remote button to exit, press and release the Learn button on the opener, and hold the programmed remote button until the lights flash or you hear two clicks. Full remote steps are in our guide to programming a LiftMaster remote.
How do you program the travel limits on a LiftMaster?
Travel limits tell the opener where to stop at the top and bottom. Reset them if the door stops short, reverses just before the floor, or presses hard into the floor. These steps are Chamberlain’s for Security+ 2.0 and myQ openers with an Adjustment button and UP and DOWN arrows. Chamberlain notes they do not apply to model numbers ending in “MC.”
Total time: 10 minutes
Make sure the door is connected
The door must be attached to the trolley, not released, before you start.
Enter programming mode
Press and hold the Adjustment button until the UP button flashes or you hear a beep.
Set and save the open position
Hold the UP or DOWN arrow until the door is where you want it to stop when open, then press and release the Adjustment button. The lights flash twice and the DOWN button flashes.
Set and save the closed position
Hold the arrows until the door reaches the closed position you want, then press and release the Adjustment button. The lights flash twice and the UP button flashes.
Run the door up and down
Press and release UP; the door opens and the DOWN button flashes. Press and release DOWN; the door closes and programming is complete.
Test the safety reversal
Lay a 2×4 flat on the floor centered under the open door, then close the door. It must reverse when it touches the board.
If the lights flash 5 times during programming, it timed out, so start over. If they flash 10 times, fix the safety sensors first.
⚠️ Safety first
- Never adjust, loosen or remove garage door springs, cables, pulleys or brackets. They are under extreme tension and can cause serious injury. Leave them to a trained door technician.
- Keep hands, tools and clothing away from the door, rollers, rails and the moving trolley while you program or test.
- Do not stand or let anyone walk under a moving door. Keep children and pets out of the garage while you test.
- Test the safety reversal with a 2×4 laid flat after any travel or force change, and every month. If the door does not reverse, stop using the opener until it is fixed.
- Unplug the opener before working on any wiring or touching the logic board area. Disconnect power at the breaker before removing panels.
- Use a sturdy ladder and do not overreach while pressing the Learn button.
When should you call a technician?
Most programming is a do-it-yourself job, but stop and call a pro in these cases:
- The door fails the 2×4 safety reversal test after you reset the travel limits.
- The door is heavy, sticks or does not stay put when disconnected from the opener.
- A spring is broken or a cable is loose or frayed.
- No remote will pair even with fresh batteries and the right remote type, which can point to a logic board problem.
How can you prevent programming problems?
- Write down your opener’s model number and Learn button color and keep it near the wall control.
- Press and release the Learn button quickly; never hold it unless you mean to erase memory.
- Buy remotes that match your Learn button color using LiftMaster’s compatibility chart.
- Replace remote batteries when range starts to drop.
- Retest the safety reversal every month.
Frequently asked questions
How long do I have to program a LiftMaster remote after pressing Learn?
Press and hold the remote button within 30 seconds. Purple, red/orange and green Learn buttons stay active for 30 seconds. Yellow-button openers stay in programming longer, but Chamberlain says only the first 30 seconds accept remotes and keypads.
Why won’t my LiftMaster opener learn my remote?
The remote may be the wrong type for your Learn button color, its battery may be weak, or you may have held the Learn button long enough to clear memory. Check the color, change the battery, and press and release Learn quickly.
Do I need a ladder to program a LiftMaster?
Not always. If your wall control has a Learn button or a screen, or your opener has Wi-Fi and the myQ app, you can pair from the ground.
Does programming a new remote erase my old ones?
No. Pressing and releasing Learn adds a remote without removing others. Only holding the Learn button for about 6 seconds clears all remotes and keypads.
What happens if the opener lights flash 10 times while I program travel?
Ten flashes mean a safety sensor problem. Clear anything in the beam, clean the lenses and realign the sensors until both LEDs glow steady, then start again.
