To program a LiftMaster remote, press and release the Learn button on the opener, then within 30 seconds press and hold the remote button until the opener lights flash or you hear two clicks. Let go, and the remote is paired. The whole job takes about a minute once you are on the ladder. If it will not pair, the usual culprits are a dead remote battery or a remote that does not match your opener’s Learn button color.

LiftMaster remotes (made by The Chamberlain Group) pair through the Learn button on the opener or on a compatible wall control. Here is how to program a LiftMaster remote the fast way, plus the extra step universal remotes need. For anything bigger, such as travel limits or keypads, see our full LiftMaster programming guide.

How do you program a LiftMaster remote? (step by step)

Use the Learn button on the motor unit and have the remote in your hand before you press it. The 30-second window is short, so do not climb down between steps.

Total time: 1 minute

Climb up to the motor unit

Set a sturdy ladder next to the opener and bring the remote with you.

Press and release the Learn button

Press it once and let go right away. The LED next to it lights up steady. Holding it for about 6 seconds erases all remotes, so keep the press quick.

Press and hold the remote button

Within 30 seconds, press and hold the button you want to use for this door.

Release when the opener responds

Let go when the opener lights flash or you hear two clicks.

Test it

Stand clear of the door and press the remote button. The door should move.

Repeat for every remote and every extra button. For a two-door garage, program one button to each opener separately.

Can you program a LiftMaster remote without a ladder?

Yes, if you have a wall control with a Learn button, a screen-style control panel, or a Wi-Fi opener.

  • Wall control with a Learn button: Press and release its Learn button twice; the LED starts blinking. Within 30 seconds, hold the remote button until the lights flash or you hear two clicks.
  • Control panel with a screen: Go to PROGRAM, then REMOTE, then hold the remote button until the opener responds.
  • myQ app (Wi-Fi openers with a yellow or white Learn button): Go to Settings, Devices, Add a New Device, Accessory, Garage Door Remote. Choose the opener, scan the remote’s QR code or choose the remote type, and tap Get Started.

On jackshaft models 8500 and RJO20, Chamberlain says to use the Learn button on the myQ control panel instead of the opener.

How do you program a LiftMaster universal remote?

Universal remotes like the 893MAX first need to be told which radio system your opener uses. Find the color of your opener’s Learn button, then follow Chamberlain’s 893MAX steps:

  1. Remove the visor clip. Press and hold the program button on the back until the LED on the front turns on.
  2. Press and release the button you want to program the number of times in the table below.
  3. Press any other button on the remote to exit.
  4. Press and release the Learn button on the opener.
  5. Press and hold the programmed remote button until the lights flash or you hear two clicks.
  6. Test it and reattach the visor clip.

The 890MAX works the same way, except the program button is on the side and needs a paper clip or safety pin to press.

Which LiftMaster remotes work with your opener?

Match the remote to your opener’s Learn button color. LiftMaster’s compatibility page lists these current models:

Learn button colorCurrent compatible remotes
White (2025 to present)L991S, L993S, L932M, L993M, L992U
Yellow (2011 to 2022)L932M, L993M, L992U
Purple (2005 to 2014)L932M, L993M, L992U
Red/orange (1997 to 2005)L932M, L993M, L992U
Green (1994 to 1997)L992U

Older remotes such as the 891LM and 893LM work only with yellow Learn buttons, and many older purple-only remotes will not work with a yellow-button opener. Learn more in our guide to LiftMaster Security+ 2.0.

Why won’t my LiftMaster remote program?

Start with the battery, then the compatibility, then the timing. These are the common causes:

Chamberlain’s support page also says to wait for the Learn LED to turn off before you try again after a failed attempt.

Most LiftMaster remotes take a 3V CR2032 coin cell, inserted positive side up. Some models, such as the 74LM and 895MAX, take two, and the 892LT and 894LT use an AAA battery, according to Chamberlain.

How do you remove a lost LiftMaster remote?

You cannot delete just one remote. Hold the Learn button until the LED turns off, about 6 seconds, to erase all remotes and keypads, then reprogram the ones you still have. Our LiftMaster reset guide explains which resets erase what.

⚠️ Safety first

  • Keep hands and clothing clear of the door and moving trolley when you test a new remote, and never walk under a moving door.
  • Keep remotes out of reach of children, and do not let children play with them.
  • Coin cell batteries are dangerous if swallowed. Keep them away from children and seek medical help right away if one is swallowed.
  • Use a sturdy ladder at the motor unit and do not overreach.
  • Never adjust springs, cables or brackets; they are under extreme tension. Disconnect power at the breaker before removing panels.

When should you call a technician?

  • A new, compatible remote with a fresh battery still will not pair.
  • The opener does not respond to the wall control either.
  • The opener shows flashing arrows or a blinking Learn LED code.
  • The door moves but stops, reverses or strains, which is a door or opener problem, not a remote problem.

How can you prevent remote problems?

  • Change remote batteries as soon as range drops.
  • Keep spare remotes stored away from heat, such as a hot dashboard.
  • Note your Learn button color before buying a replacement remote.
  • Erase and reprogram all remotes after one is lost or stolen.

Frequently asked questions

How do I program my LiftMaster remote without the Learn button?

Use a wall control that has a Learn button (press it twice), a screen-style control panel (PROGRAM, then REMOTE), or the myQ app on a Wi-Fi opener. Without one of these, you need to reach the Learn button on the motor unit.

How many remotes can a LiftMaster opener hold?

Chamberlain’s support pages we reviewed do not give a single number for all models. Check the owner’s manual for your model if you plan to pair many remotes.

Why does my LiftMaster remote only work up close?

A weak battery is the most common cause. Replace the coin cell, then test again. If range stays short with a new battery, contact LiftMaster support.

Do I need to reprogram my remote after changing the battery?

Chamberlain’s battery replacement steps do not include reprogramming. If the remote does not work after a battery change, check the battery direction, then reprogram it with the Learn button.

Will a Chamberlain remote work with a LiftMaster opener?

Both brands are made by The Chamberlain Group and use the same radio systems by Learn button color. Check that the remote lists your opener’s Learn button color before you buy.
