The OE code on an LG washer means the washer cannot drain the water from the drum. If you see the OE code on LG washer models, the usual causes are a kinked or clogged drain hose, a clogged drain pump filter, or too many suds. Most of the time you can fix it yourself: straighten the drain hose, clean the drain pump filter, then run a spin cycle and a tub clean.
Quick facts
| Code | OE (some LG models show E03 or E21 for the same fault) |
|---|---|
| Appliance | LG front-load and top-load washers |
| What it means | Drain error; the washer could not pump the water out of the drum |
| Time needed | 15 to 45 minutes |
| Difficulty | Easy to moderate |
| Most likely cause | A clogged drain pump filter (front-load) or a kinked drain hose (all models) |
The OE code on LG washers (made by LG Electronics) stops the cycle because the tub still holds water and the washer cannot move on to the spin. It is usually a blockage you can reach, not a broken part. For other codes, see our complete list of LG washer error codes.
What does the LG washer OE code mean?
OE is LG’s drain error. LG says the code appears when the washer is unable to drain the water used during the wash cycle. On top-load models, LG says the code shows after the washer has failed to drain for 13 minutes.
Repair guides often call OE an “outlet error.” The name matters less than the result: the washer will not spin or finish the cycle until the water can leave the drum. LG’s error list groups OE with the codes E03 and E21, which some models show instead.
What causes the OE code on an LG washer?
LG names three main causes: a kinked or clogged drain hose, a clogged drain pump filter, and excess suds. If none of those apply, the drain pump itself may have failed.
| Cause | How to check | Fix | DIY difficulty |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kinked, pinched or clogged drain hose | Pull the washer out and look at the hose behind it, including where it meets the wall | Straighten the hose, clear any clog, leave room behind the washer | Easy |
| Clogged drain pump filter (front-load) | Open the small panel at the bottom left front and remove the filter | Drain the water, clean the filter and its opening | Easy to moderate |
| Too many suds | Filter is clear but the drum holds foamy water | Run a tub clean, then use less HE detergent | Easy |
| Drain pump not working | No hum during a spin-only test | Pump repair or replacement | Hard |
| Pressure system or control fault | Drum is empty but OE still shows | Have a technician diagnose it | Pro only |
How do you fix the OE code on an LG washer? (step by step)
Work through these steps in order. Test with a spin cycle after each fix, because the first two steps clear most OE codes.
Total time: 45 minutes
Turn the washer off and unplug it
Press Power, then unplug the washer before you pull it out or open the filter panel. Have towels and a shallow pan ready, because the drum may still be full of water.
Check the drain hose
Pull the washer far enough from the wall to see the hose. LG says to look for a bend, a clog, or a hose pinched between the washer and the wall. Straighten it or clear the clog.
Run a spin-only test
Plug the washer back in, press Power, choose a high spin speed or Spin Only, and press Start/Pause. LG says you should hear the pump hum, and possibly water draining, within the first 15 seconds on front-load models.
Drain the water and remove the pump filter (front-load)
Unplug the washer and open the service panel at the bottom left. Unclip the small drain hose, remove its cap and let the water run into a shallow pan, then twist the filter counter-clockwise to remove it.
Clean the filter and its opening
Rinse the filter with warm water and a soft brush, and clear lint, coins or hair from the opening. Refit the small hose cap, screw the filter back in clockwise until it stops, and close the cover.
Run a tub clean with less detergent
LG recommends a Tub Clean cycle after clearing the filter. If the filter was already clean, LG says suds may be the cause, so run Tub Clean and cut back on detergent.
Reset and run a test cycle
Turn the washer off and on, then run a short empty cycle. If OE comes back, or you heard no pump hum during the spin test, the washer needs repair.
On a front-loader, the little drain hose next to the filter is the easiest way to empty the drum. LG warns not to pull it out too far or it will kink. If nothing comes out, push it back in about an inch.
Is it different on top-load vs front-load models?
Yes. The code means the same thing, but the checks and the drain method differ.
Front-load washers
- Most have a drain pump filter behind a small panel at the bottom front. LG lists cleaning it as a main fix.
- LG’s spin test is to set spin to High and start a spin-only cycle, then listen for a pump hum in the first 15 seconds.
- LG notes that heavy suds can create air pockets, so the pump pulls air instead of water and reports a drain fault.
Top-load washers
- LG’s top-load guide focuses on the drain hose, then a Spin Only cycle from the Special Use menu, then a Tub Clean.
- If your model has no Spin Only option, LG describes a forced drain: start any cycle, wait a few minutes, press Start/Pause to pause, and the washer times out after 8 minutes, shows dr and tries to drain.
- After that, LG suggests an empty wash cycle to see if the code returns.
How do you reset an LG washer after the OE code?
There is no special OE reset. The code clears once the washer can drain and finish a spin.
- Press Power to turn the washer off and unplug it.
- Fix the hose, filter or suds problem.
- Plug it back in, press Power, select Spin Only or a Rinse+Spin cycle, and press Start/Pause.
If the code comes back right away with an empty drum, the problem is likely the pump or the pressure system. For general reset steps on other codes, see our LG washer error codes guide.
⚠️ Safety first
- Unplug the washer before opening the drain filter panel or moving it.
- Disconnect power at the breaker before removing panels.
- Turn off the water supply valves before pulling the washer away from the wall.
- Water in the drum may be hot after a warm or hot wash. Let it cool before draining it through the filter.
- Expect more water than you think. Drain into a shallow pan in small batches and keep towels on the floor.
When should you call a technician?
Call for service once the hose and filter are clear and the code still returns. LG says if you cannot hear the pump hum during the spin test, the drain pump is not working and the unit needs repair. Clear signs include:
- No humming sound at all during a spin-only cycle.
- OE returns after you cleaned the filter and ran a Tub Clean.
- The drum is empty, but the washer still shows OE.
- You hear grinding from the pump area, or the filter will not unscrew.
Fred’s Appliance Academy says replacing the pump motor means removing the top, front panel and door assembly. That job suits people with appliance experience, so most homeowners should book a pro.
How can you prevent the OE code from coming back?
Most repeat OE codes come from a dirty filter, too much detergent or a squashed hose.
- Clean the drain pump filter regularly, and right away if you see slow draining.
- Empty pockets before washing. Coins, hair ties and tissues end up in the filter.
- Use HE detergent only, in the amount on the label. Use no more than one pod per load, as LG advises.
- Run Tub Clean when the washer reminds you. See our LG washer TCL code guide.
- Leave a few inches behind the washer so the drain hose cannot get pinched.
Frequently asked questions
Can I still use my LG washer with an OE code?
Not until the water drains. The washer cannot spin with water in the drum, so clear the hose and filter first. Once a spin-only cycle drains normally, you can use it again.
How do I drain an LG washer with the OE code?
On a front-loader, unplug it, open the bottom-left panel and drain water through the small drain hose into a shallow pan. On a top-loader, run Spin Only, or use LG’s forced drain by pausing a cycle and waiting for it to time out and show dr.
Where is the drain filter on an LG washer?
On LG front-load washers, it sits behind a small service panel at the bottom left of the front. LG’s top-load OE guide does not mention a pump filter; it focuses on the drain hose, a Spin Only cycle and Tub Clean instead.
Can too much detergent cause the OE code?
Yes. LG says excess suds can form air pockets, so the pump draws air instead of water and reports a drain fault. Run Tub Clean and use less HE detergent.
Why does my LG washer show OE when the drum is empty?
If no water is left, the washer may not be sensing that the drum is empty, which points to a part fault rather than a blockage. LG says an OE code that returns after the basic checks needs repair service.
Is OE the same on Samsung washers?
Samsung uses its own drain codes, and the names and steps differ by model. See our Samsung washer OE code guide for Samsung-specific steps.
