LG dryer code D80 means the dryer’s Flow Sense system has detected that the exhaust vent is about 80% blocked. It is a venting warning, not a broken dryer. The usual fix is to clean the lint filter, then clear lint from the exhaust hose, the wall duct and the outside vent flap so air can flow freely again. On LG gas dryers, LG notes that D80 can also point to a lack of gas reaching the dryer.
Quick facts
| Code | D80 (shown as d80; related codes are d75, d90 and d95) |
|---|---|
| Appliance | LG electric and gas dryers with Flow Sense |
| What it means | Exhaust airflow is restricted by about 80% |
| Time needed | 20 minutes to 2 hours |
| Difficulty | Easy to moderate |
| Most likely cause | Lint buildup in the exhaust duct or a crushed hose behind the dryer |
The D80 code on LG dryers (made by LG Electronics) is an early warning that air cannot leave the dryer the way it should. Clearing it now protects your clothes, your energy bill and your home. For other brands and codes, browse our dryer error code guides.
What does the LG dryer D80 code mean?
D80 means the dryer has detected roughly an 80% restriction in the exhaust system. LG’s error code list explains that d75, d80, d90 and d95 show the duct is clogged about 75%, 80%, 90% or 95%. The dryer may keep running, but it will take longer to dry and will run hotter than it should.
The warning comes from LG’s Flow Sense feature. LG Canada describes it as a safety alert, not a dryer malfunction: sensors watch for a sudden rise in temperature, and the software estimates how badly the exhaust is blocked. Some models show bars on a Flow Sense icon instead of, or as well as, a number. LG says two or four lit bars mean the exhaust is severely restricted.
D80 is the milder level. If you ignore it, the restriction usually grows, and you may next see the LG dryer D90 code or d95.
What causes the LG dryer code D80?
Almost every D80 code comes from the venting, not from the dryer itself. LG lists lint in the filter and duct, a crushed or kinked hose, a stuck outside flap, and ducts that are too long or bent too many times.
| Cause | How to check | Fix | DIY difficulty |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lint filter clogged or coated | Pull the filter and hold it to the light; look for a waxy film from dryer sheets | Clean it every load; wash it with warm soapy water if coated and let it dry fully | Easy |
| Lint packed in the exhaust hose | Unplug the dryer, pull it out and disconnect the hose | Vacuum or brush the hose; replace it if it is foil or plastic | Easy |
| Hose crushed, kinked or dented behind the dryer | Look behind the dryer for flattened or sharply bent duct | Straighten it or replace it with rigid or semi-rigid metal duct | Easy |
| Outside vent flap stuck or clogged | Run the dryer on Air Dry and go outside to feel for strong airflow | Clear lint, nests or ice; replace a flap that will not open fully | Easy |
| Lint deep in the wall or roof duct | Weak airflow outside even after the hose and flap are clear | Use a vent brush kit or hire a vent cleaning service | Moderate |
| Duct run too long or too many elbows | Measure the run and count 90-degree elbows | Shorten or reroute the duct to LG’s length limits | Pro (often) |
| Gas not reaching the dryer (gas models only) | Dryer tumbles but gives no heat; check the gas valve | Open the gas shutoff valve fully; call the installer or a pro if it is open | Easy to pro |
| Faulty blower fan | Code stays after the whole duct is cleaned or replaced | Contact LG service | Pro only |
How do you fix the LG dryer D80 code? (step by step)
Work from the easiest checks to the hardest, and test after each one. Most D80 codes clear once the hose and outside flap are clean.
Total time: 1 hour
Turn the dryer off and unplug it
Press Power, then unplug the dryer or switch off its breaker. On a gas dryer, also close the gas shutoff valve before you pull the dryer away from the wall.
Clean the lint filter
Remove the lint filter and clear all the lint. LG suggests washing a coated filter with soap and water, then letting it dry completely before you put it back.
Disconnect and clean the exhaust hose
Pull the dryer out carefully and loosen the clamp on the exhaust hose. Vacuum or brush lint out of the hose and the dryer’s exhaust outlet.
Straighten or replace a damaged hose
LG says the hose should be straight or in a gentle S-curve, with no crushes, dents, kinks or holes. Replace foil or plastic hose with 4-inch rigid or semi-rigid metal duct.
Clean the wall duct
Brush out the duct inside the wall as far as you can reach. If the run is long, goes through a ceiling or roof, or you cannot reach the lint, LG recommends a professional vent cleaning service.
Check the outside vent flap
Reconnect everything, run the dryer on Air Dry, and go outside. LG says the flap should open fully with strong airflow; clear any lint, debris or nests, and replace a cover that cannot open.
Check the gas supply on gas models
If your gas dryer tumbles but makes no heat, make sure the gas shutoff valve is fully open and the gas line is not kinked. If the valve is open and you still get no heat, call the installer or LG service.
Reset the dryer and run a test cycle
Plug the dryer back in and run a timed dry with an empty drum. LG Canada says the code should clear by itself during the next cycle once airflow is restored; if it stays, unplug the dryer for about 5 minutes and try again.
LG’s venting guide limits a 4-inch rigid metal duct with a 4-inch wall cap to 65 feet with no elbows, dropping to 28 feet with four 90-degree elbows. LG says not to use more than four elbows. If your run is longer, D80 will likely keep coming back even after cleaning.
Is it different on gas vs electric LG dryers?
The vent causes and fixes are the same on both types. The difference is that LG’s error code list says D80 on a gas dryer may also mean the dryer is not getting enough gas.
Electric dryers
- D80 is almost always a venting problem.
- If the dryer runs but gives no heat and shows no D code, check the breaker. A no-heat problem with an nP or PS code points to the home’s power supply instead.
Gas dryers
- Check the vent first, then confirm the gas shutoff valve is fully open.
- LG uses a separate gAS code (shown as 9A5 on some displays) when the dryer is not receiving gas. If you see that, follow the gas supply steps above.
- Never try to repair the gas valve, burner or gas line yourself.
How do you reset an LG dryer after the D80 code?
There is no special reset button for D80. Once airflow is restored, LG says the code clears automatically during the next drying cycle.
- Fix the venting problem and reconnect the duct.
- Plug the dryer in, press Power and start a cycle.
- If the code still shows, unplug the dryer or switch off the breaker for about 5 minutes, then try again.
LG’s general reset for its dryers is to unplug the unit, hold Start/Pause for 5 seconds with no power, then plug it back in. That clears glitches, but it will not hide a real blockage, because Flow Sense measures again on every load.
⚠️ Safety first
- Unplug the dryer or switch off its breaker before you pull it out or disconnect the vent.
- Disconnect power at the breaker before removing panels.
- On a gas dryer, close the gas shutoff valve before moving the dryer, and do not kink or strain the gas line.
- If you smell gas, leave the home and call your gas utility or 911 from outside. Do not operate switches.
- LG warns that running a dryer with a severely restricted exhaust may be unsafe. Do not keep drying loads until the vent is clear.
When should you call a technician?
Call for help when the duct is out of reach or the code keeps coming back after a full cleaning. LG says that if the warning persists after you clean or replace the duct, the blower fan may be defective and you should contact LG service. Clear signs include:
- Airflow outside stays weak even though the hose and flap are clean.
- The duct runs through walls, ceilings or a roof and you cannot reach the clog.
- Your duct is longer than LG’s limits or has more than four 90-degree elbows.
- D80 returns on every load, even with a brand-new hose and clean duct.
- A gas dryer gives no heat with the gas valve fully open.
A vent cleaning service handles the duct. LG service or an appliance technician handles the blower fan and gas parts.
How can you prevent the D80 code from coming back?
Regular cleaning and a short, metal duct prevent most repeat D80 codes. The US Fire Administration reports that failure to clean was the leading factor in residential clothes dryer fires, so this habit matters for safety too.
- Clean the lint filter before or after every load.
- Wash the lint filter with soapy water every few months if you use dryer sheets.
- Deep-clean the full vent system every 6 to 12 months, as LG Canada recommends.
- Use 4-inch rigid or semi-rigid metal duct, never foil or plastic.
- Keep the outside flap clear of lint, snow, plants and nests.
- Recheck the hose behind the dryer any time you move the dryer.
Frequently asked questions
Can I still use my LG dryer with a D80 code?
The dryer may keep running, but you should fix the vent before more loads. A blocked vent makes drying slower and the dryer hotter, and LG treats the code as a safety warning.
Why does my LG dryer say D80 when the lint filter is clean?
The lint filter only catches part of the lint. The rest builds up in the hose, the wall duct and the outside flap, which is where most D80 restrictions are. Check the full vent path, not just the filter.
How do I clear the D80 code on my LG dryer?
Clean the vent and start a new cycle; LG says the code clears automatically once airflow is restored. If it stays, unplug the dryer for about 5 minutes and try again.
What is the difference between D80, D90 and D95 on an LG dryer?
They show how badly the exhaust is blocked: about 80%, 90% or 95%. D80 is the earliest warning, and D95 is severe. All three are fixed the same way.
Can a gas LG dryer show D80 with no vent blockage?
Yes. LG’s error code list says D80 on a gas dryer may mean a lack of gas supply. Make sure the gas valve is fully open, and call a pro if the dryer still gives no heat.
