The bE code on an LG dishwasher means “bubble error”: there are too many suds inside the tub. The LG dishwasher bE code usually appears after someone uses regular dish soap or too much detergent. LG’s fix is to run an empty Normal cycle with no detergent, rinse aid set to L0 and a bowl of milk on the upper rack to break down the foam, then switch to powder or tablet dishwasher detergent.
Quick facts
| Code | bE (can look like “6E” on some displays) |
|---|---|
| Appliance | LG built-in dishwashers |
| What it means | Bubble error; excess suds detected, so the dishwasher stops to prevent a leak |
| Time needed | 1 to 3 hours (mostly cycle run time) |
| Difficulty | Easy |
| Most likely cause | Hand dish soap in the dispenser, or too much liquid detergent |
The bE code on LG dishwashers (made by LG Electronics) is almost always a detergent problem, not a broken part. Below are the causes, LG’s step-by-step foam removal method, and the signs that mean you need service. For every other code, see our dishwasher error code guides.
What does the LG dishwasher bE code mean?
LG says bE stands for “bubble error.” The dishwasher shows it when it detects too many suds, and it stops the cycle so the foam does not spill out of the door and leak onto your floor.
On a seven-segment display, a lowercase “b” can look a lot like the number 6. If you see something that reads like 6E, check our LG dishwasher 6E code guide, because it is often the same bubble error.
The code protects your kitchen. It does not mean the pump or control board has failed, and in most homes it clears once the suds are gone.
What causes the LG dishwasher bE code?
Suds are the cause in almost every case. LG names hand dish soap, too much liquid dishwasher detergent, some eco-friendly detergents, and leftover suds from an earlier wash.
| Cause | How to check | Fix | DIY difficulty |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hand dish soap used in the dispenser | Ask who loaded it last; look for foam in the tub | Run LG’s milk cycle, then use only dishwasher detergent | Easy |
| Too much liquid or gel detergent | Look for detergent filled above the dispenser line | Use less, or switch to powder or tablets | Easy |
| Eco-friendly or “Type 1” detergent | Check the detergent label | LG suggests switching to a recommended detergent or using less | Easy |
| Dishes prewashed with dish soap and not rinsed | Look for soapy film on dishes before loading | Rinse dishes with plain water only | Easy |
| Leftover suds from a past cycle | bE shows during an empty run with no detergent | Repeat the milk cycle until the foam is gone | Easy |
| No suds at all, but bE still shows | Open the door mid-cycle; tub has no foam | Request service | Pro only |
LG suggests a quick test. Empty the dishwasher and run it with no detergent. If foam still builds and bE comes back, leftover detergent is the problem, so follow the milk cycle below.
How do you fix the LG dishwasher bE code? (step by step)
These steps combine LG’s two official bE guides. Most dishwashers clear after one or two milk cycles.
Total time: 3 hours
Turn off the dishwasher and wait
Press Power to stop the cycle. Open the door and let any foam settle for a few minutes before you look inside.
Remove the dishes
Take out all dishes and racks of food so the cycle can focus on rinsing out the suds. Wipe away any thick foam you can reach with a towel.
Empty the detergent dispenser
Make sure there is no detergent in the dispenser or anywhere else in the tub. Do not add any for this cycle.
Set the rinse aid level to L0
Change the rinse aid setting to L0 so no rinse aid is released. The settings menu varies by model, so check your owner’s manual if you cannot find it.
Place a bowl of milk on the upper rack
Put a bowl holding 200 to 300 mL of milk (about 1 cup) in the center of the upper rack. LG says the milk helps reduce the foam.
Run a Normal cycle
Select the Normal cycle. One LG guide also suggests adding the High Temp and Extra Rinse options if your model has them. Start the dishwasher.
Repeat if foam remains
If suds are still there when the cycle ends, repeat the milk cycle. LG notes that detergent and rinse aid formulas vary, so one round is not always enough.
Reset the rinse aid level
When the foam is gone, set the rinse aid back to its original level. Then run a normal load with the correct dishwasher detergent.
Does the bE code differ between LG dishwasher models?
Not in meaning. LG’s general dishwasher error code guide lists bE as the bubble error, and LG notes its bE steps are based on standard models. The fix is the same, but the location of the rinse aid setting and the option names (High Temp, Extra Rinse, Extra Dry) differ by model, so keep your owner’s manual handy.
LG also lists a separate leak and overfill code, AE. Suds can trigger that one too, because overflowing foam can reach the leak float. If your dishwasher shows AE instead, see our LG dishwasher AE code guide.
How do you reset an LG dishwasher after the bE code?
There is no special reset for bE. The code clears once the suds are gone and the dishwasher can run without detecting foam.
- Press Power to turn the dishwasher off.
- Run LG’s milk cycle until no suds are left.
- Turn the dishwasher back on and start a normal cycle.
If the display seems stuck, turn off the dishwasher’s circuit breaker for a minute, then turn it back on. This only restarts the electronics. It will not remove suds, so bE comes back if foam is still in the tub.
⚠️ Safety first
- Turn off the dishwasher and switch off its circuit breaker before reaching under the door or removing the lower kick plate to wipe up water.
- Disconnect power at the breaker before removing panels.
- Wipe up foam or water on the floor right away to prevent slips.
- The tub, dishes and milk bowl can be hot after a High Temp cycle. Let them cool before you handle them.
When should you call a technician?
Call LG or a qualified technician when the code is not caused by suds. LG says that if bE appears without suds, you should request service. Clear signs include:
- bE shows during a cycle and you see no foam at all in the tub.
- The code returns after two or three milk cycles and a switch to powder or tablet detergent.
- bE appears together with water on the floor or other codes.
- The dishwasher will not drain or start after the foam is cleared.
Technicians on the Appliantology repair forum note that, when a dishwasher is level and has no suds, LG has pointed to a clogged pump or a damaged or misaligned top nozzle. Both sit inside the machine, so leave them to a pro. LG says a service fee may apply if your dishwasher is out of warranty.
How can you prevent the bE code from coming back?
The right detergent, in the right amount, prevents nearly all bE codes.
- Use only detergent labeled for automatic dishwashers. Never put hand dish soap in the dispenser.
- Choose powder or tablet detergent, which LG recommends because the amount is easy to control.
- If you use liquid or gel, do not fill past the dispenser line.
- Prewash or scrape dishes with plain water. If you did use dish soap, rinse it off fully before loading.
- If you switch to an eco-friendly detergent and bE starts appearing, use less of it or go back to a standard dishwasher detergent.
Frequently asked questions
What does bE mean on an LG dishwasher?
bE means “bubble error.” LG says the dishwasher detected too many suds and stopped to prevent a leak. It is usually caused by dish soap or too much detergent.
How do I get rid of suds in my LG dishwasher?
Remove the dishes, leave the detergent dispenser empty and set the rinse aid to L0. Put a bowl with 200 to 300 mL of milk on the upper rack and run a Normal cycle. Repeat until the foam is gone, then reset the rinse aid level.
Why does milk stop suds in a dishwasher?
LG’s own guides recommend milk because it helps reduce foam. A bowl of about 1 cup on the upper rack, run on a Normal cycle, is LG’s official method.
Why does my LG dishwasher show bE with no detergent?
Leftover suds from an earlier wash can still be inside the tub, even on an empty run. Run the milk cycle once or twice. If bE still shows and you see no foam, LG says to request service.
Can I use my LG dishwasher with a bE code?
Not until the suds are cleared. The code stops the cycle to keep foam from leaking out. Run LG’s milk cycle first, then wash normally with dishwasher detergent.
Is 6E the same as bE on an LG dishwasher?
Often, yes. On many displays a lowercase “b” looks like a 6, and LG’s official code list has bE but no 6E. Our LG 6E guide explains how to tell the difference.
